"God, Bring Our Darling From the Fight"

Ahh, I love this picture. This beauty was completed by Thomas Nast in 1862. He was a cartoonist, and he had this print done to show the thoughts and feelings of a Civil War Christmas. I believe he was able to describe the Civil War perfectly in one picture.

Let's really examine it:

Christmas With the Lincolns

Ahh, Christmas: The time where thousands will be tearing wrapping paper and thinking of Baby Jesus. Many will file into church for their two day-a-year limit (Christmas and Easter). Electric bills will sky-rocket as lights and decorations fill yards and rooftops. And Santa will probably scare at least one toddler this season….

Lost on Veteran's Day Weekend

The young girl stared at the map. She’d been on the Gettysburg battlefield before, but she knew this time they were lost.

She and her grandfather only wanted to find Hancock Avenue, get past the Pennsylvania Monument, and find where a road intersected with that same avenue. Easy enough task, right? Well, she was finding it to be very difficult. They had found a parking spot at the Soldiers’ National Cemetery, but now they had to walk to find the correct path.

Behind the Song: The Legend of the Rebel Soldier

This has been one of my favorite Civil War songs here lately. It's a beautiful, stirring melody. (For any of you country music listeners out there, this is Lee Ann Womack singing on the Divided & United Civil War songs CD...) Just press play below:

Call Me Judah: A Short Story

I took a deep breath. “You can do this Johnny,” I told myself.
I looked around me. I saw my division, my regiment, my company, my group of friends; we seemed small in the thousands lined up for battle.  I had seen battle before, lots of times. But my hands still shook every time; my legs still trembled. I admitted to myself: I was scared.

Call Me Judah: A Short Story Part lV

Part IV

“I can’t believe you’re here!”
I was basically screaming in delight. Kind of like a child on Christmas; though most children wake up to presents on Christmas, and I woke to find my friend by my bedside.
I was a pathetic sight, but I didn't care. I was so worried about Judah, and now he was here!

Call Me Judah: A Short Story Part lll

Part lll
I saw light. Brightness; the pain was gone. What relief. Judah came running toward me, arms extended. He screamed my name over and over.

Call Me Judah: A Short Story Part ll

Part ll

Even while floating on darkness I could feel the pain. I knew sleep would not let me forget it, and I knew it would chase me to the grave.
What am I saying? I have to survive. I have to live!

Call Me Judah: A Short Story Part 1

The following is a short story that I wrote surrounding the battle of Antietam. I'll be posting it in parts as it was written, but I will also be posting it in one full article upon completion.

Survival: One Meal At a Time --> Confederate

The last article was about a typical Union soldier's diet, from salted pork to hardtack. Today we’re going to discuss the Confederate menu. Did “Johnny Reb” eat the same way "Billy Yank" did; or different?
